But it clearly stated the extraterrestrials who sent it have visited Earth in the past. It went on to warn that men must learn to live in peace before we destroy ourselves - just as the extraterrestrials have destroyed themselves.
"It's almost as if we received a Christmas message from God Himself," said one NASA source familiar with the message.
"And while we have yet to determine precisely where the message came from, there are strong indications that it originated from a planet in our own Milky Way.
"There is absolutely no possibility that the message is a hoax," he continued. "The radio telescopes that picked it up in California and Puerto Rico are aimed into space and designed to ignore signals that originate on Earth."
U.S. space officials refused to discuss the message "pending authorization from the White House."
But it was confirmed by no less a figure than Dr. Werner Kanbach, whose scholarly texts on radio astronomy are considered to be standards in the field.
The researcher refused to name his sources. But it is commonly known that he has served as a consultant to America's space program since the late 1980s and has friends in high places, particularly the upper echelons of NASA.
According to Dr. Kanbach, the alien message was received at 12:03 a.m. Eastern time on November 28. Parts of the transmission were unintelligible. But Dr. Kanbach provided the following transcript.
"Greetings . . . wishes to the planet Earth . . . season of peace . . . harmony . . . destruction of our planet and civilization . . . warning . . . learn from our mistakes . . . war and hatred here and on Earth . . . our fate will be yours . . . act before it is too late."
"Portions of the message are missing but the thrust is clear," said Dr. Kanbach. "A dying extraterrestrial civilization is most interested in the future of our planet.
"That civilization is warning us to mend our violent and aggressive ways before we destroy ourselves like they destroyed themselves.
"We have no way of knowing exactly what happened on the planet. But it's possible they waged global war and fear we will one day do the same.
"The implications of such a message are almost beyond comprehension," continued the expert. "These aliens might literally have given us a glimpse of our own future."
Meanwhile, UFO organizations around the world are calling for "full and immediate disclosure of all the facts."
"The message was intended for all men," one researcher said.
