And while medical authorities can't vouch for her story, they admit that somebody or something seared Mrs. Garcia's face away, leaving nothing but ugly scar tissue behind.
"The woman suffered unimaginable trauma, but we are at a loss to explain what happened or why," said Dr. Jayme Santiago Ramos, Mrs. Garcia's physician.
"She says the damage was done by extraterrestrials and I tend to believe her because I know her to be a very truthful woman - and because I can't imagine anything else that could or would do damage like that to a human being."
Mrs. Garcia, who has spent more than two months in a local hospital, admits her story sounds a bit farfetched. "But I wouldn't lie about something like this," she says.
In her statement to police, the woman said she was standing in front of her home here when a saucer-shaped UFO appeared overhead. She said she started to run but blacked out - only to awaken on an examining table aboard the starship.
"Hideous creatures with long noses were standing all around, speaking in a language I didn't understand," the victim recalled. "I tried to get away but I couldn't move.
"I was screaming when a machine came down from the ceiling and stopped in front of me. One of the men waved a strange flashlight and a red beam shot out and cut into my face.
"The pain was so bad I begged God to let me die. But I didn't die, I just fainted. When I woke up, I was in a field near my home. I was in such agony, I was screaming, screaming - but I didn't know until later that my face was gone.
"Doctors told me they'd cut my face off and kept it like it was a mask."
Military intelligence officers have questioned Mrs. Garcia several times but refuse to comment on their investigation.
"Nobody knows what to make of it," said UFO researcher Francisco Barros. "Extraterrestrials rarely harm humans. Why they would want this woman's face is beyond comprehension."
